Located within a large and diverse community, with many condominiums and apartment buildings, many people in the area surrounding Willowdale United Church have limited opportunities to garden, and often a lack of engagement with meaningful community. After noticing this gap within the current context of the community, the congregation has discerned an opportunity for meaningful connecting, and believe Willowdale United Church is an excellent place to host a community garden.
On May 9th, 2012 members of the community, church and The GO Project coordinators came and participated in a work day. Eight plots were constructed and filled!
Groups, Families or individuals can rent a plot for $20 (or pay what you can). Plot renters are invited to participate in garden meetings and community events.
Since then we have created a total of 20 plots!
Grow staff is a summer position. The Role of this position is for youth to have the opportunity to live their faith and God’s love for all people and all creation in all that they do. This position offers life experience and an opportunity to participate and focus in the organization and maintenance of the community garden and other mission opportunities within The United Church of Canada.
"We struggled a lot of times but we were able to solve our problems working together. With each person equally contributing to the problem. Sharing is caring and unity is the secret to survival. Working here everyday during the summer has been a blessing for me and I’m forever grateful to this experience."
